Latin name: Clytus arietis
Size: Approximately 20mm long.
Distribution: Found throughout the UK.
Months seen: May to July.
Habitat: Hedgerows, gardens and woodland edges.
Food: Pollen. Females will also eat small insects.
Special features: Called the wasp beetle for obvious reasons. It does a
superb impression of a common wasp.
This is a harmless
insect imitating a more dangerous one in order to protect itself.
Wasp beetles are usually seen in bright sunshine scuttling over vegetation.
Their larvae live and feed inside rotten wood.
